betHQ Tips for Cheltenham Day 2

By Captain Thomsen on 15 Mar 2017

Neptune Novices Hurdle

Some strong favourites are on the table for the second day of Cheltenham 2017, which will be pulling casual bets behind heavily backed horses and reducing the value on these entries. In situations where you're looking at favourites backed out of reach of profitable each-way bets, you're better served looking for value amongst horses who could place. If one of these comes home a winner, you're also almost certain to end the day up.

Here are our picks for day two of the 2017 Cheltenham Festival.

1:30 - Neptune Novices Hurdle

Horse: Messire des Obeaux

Unlike the market favourites, Messire des Obeaux has actually won over the race distance, and has also won three and placed once this season. At 12/1 he offers plenty of value on each-way bets, and could easily cause an upset here.

2:10 - RSA Chase

Horse: Royal Vacation

The last time Royal Vacation was asked to run over a distance of 3 miles he put away the field by 12 lengths in a Grade 1. He then achieved an 8 length win in a handicap highlighting his versatility. Way overpriced given his ability.

Best Odds: 13/1 @ Paddypower

2:50 - Coral Cup

Horse: Peregrine Run

While he wasn't great last time out, he had a run of four consecutive wins over the race distance earlier in the season. His 3rd place finish at Warwick has dropped his weight ahead of this race, and he'll be able to challenge for the win. At 10/1 he'll pay out a profit if he places on each-way bets.

3:30 - Queen Mother Champion Chase

Horse: God's Own

Douvan's a top class horse, but he offers little value on the back bet and is more vulnerable in this race than his odds suggest. Meanwhile God's Own has two Grade 1 wins to his credit already and has a knack for finding places. With that in mind he looks very overpriced at 13/1.

4:10 - Cross Country Chase

Horse: Ballybroke Bridge

An experienced campaigner who has been regularly notching up places, Ballybroke Bridge has the staying power to place in the Cross Country Chase. At 34/1 all you'll need is for him to place on your each-way bets and you're in the money.

4:50 - Fred Winter Handicap Hurdle

Horse: Nietzsche

Nietzsche hasn't finished outside the top three in his last eight races and is no stranger to the distance he'll have to cover in the Fred Winter. Bookies have underrated him with a price of 26/1. If he keeps up his form he'll send you home from this race with a handsome each-way payout.

Best Odds: 26/1 @ Paddypower

5:30 - Champion Bumper

Horse: Cause Toujours

The Champion Bumper is a lottery with many horses showing similar form records, and a number with wins over this race distance beneath their belts. Cause Toujours left the field 7 lengths behind in his most recent race. He's got as good a shot as any other horse in ths field, and at 8/1 at Sky Bet is a solid each-way candidate.

Best Odds: 8/1 @ Sky Bet
