Totesport homepage

As the sole brand licensed to accept tote betting on horse races in the UK, Totesport has a central position in the UK betting industry. Tote bets like the Scoop6 have generated some of the biggest pools in betting history, resulting in overnight millionaires and making tote betting more popular than ever.

In addition, Totesport has made a name for its fixed odds betting on UK and Irish horse racing. It has also expanded its coverage of football betting markets and offers odds on other sports such as tennis, rugby, cricket, golf, darts and snooker.

For punters online, Totesport has improved the quality of its site and the range of betting markets it offers. It also generally offers decent odds. If you compare it to the top bookmakers, however, it comes short in various respects. For example, the site doesn’t provide live streaming, the set of accepted payment methods is extremely limited and there’s no live chat feature for customer service.

Here we investigate Totesport’s strengths and weaknesses in more detail.

Totesport trust & financial stability
4.5

Since 2011, Totesport has been owned by Betfred, which is the fourth largest bookmaker in the UK. It’s one of the best-known brands and its owner, Fred Done, is a respected figure in the sports betting industry.

Betfred’s turnover for the 18 month-period ending in September 2014 was a staggering £13.3 billion, with gross profit of £593 million – and there’s no sign that its growth is going to slow down any time soon.

Like Betfred,Totesport is registered with the Independent Betting Adjudication Service (IBAS), which adjudicates in cases of betting disputes.

Totesport odds
3

Totesport’s odds aren’t stellar but fall firmly in the fair to middling category. That said, it’s worth keeping an eye on Totesport’s odds for classic horse racing and football, where good value is sometimes to be had.

Totesport specials & promotions
3

Totesport’s sign-up offer is on a par with those of other leading UK bookmakers. It’s offering new customers a free £25 bet, in the form of a matched bet. Open an account, place your first bet and the bookmaker will credit your account with a free matched bet to the same stake, up to a value of £25.

Totesport can’t compare with the likes of Betfred or Paddy Power when it comes to on-going specials and promotions. However, it does offer some valuable racing promotions – including best odds guaranteed on all UK and Irish races and bonuses for winning Lucky 15, 31 and 63 bets. It also offers event-based specials for other sports, most notably football.

Totesport website

Totesport

Visually, Totesport has improved its site over the years. The site layout is straightforward and not as cluttered as some, with easy access to markets from the home page.

Totesport’s focus on horse racing is clear from the outset, with one tabbed page dedicated to racing and another for all other sports. It’s worth noting that the company has invested a lot of effort in expanding its sports betting offering, especially for football. As well as traditional betting markets, it offers a wide range of in-play markets for popular events.

On the down side, the site is subject to occasional technical glitches. It can also be difficult to find information you need and there’s a lack of consistency between pages – not all of them display the same set of navigational links, which can be confusing.

Another disadvantage is that unlike many of its competitors, Totesport doesn’t provide any live streaming of sports events. That said, it does provide coverage of UK horse racing, greyhound racing and football via its online radio channel, Totesport radio.

Totesport also provides comprehensive racing tips, stats and form information, courtesy of At The Races.

Totesport mobile
3

Totesport offers a mobile app, but only for horse racing. So you can bet on the races using an iPhone, iPad or Android device, but you can’t use the app to place other sports bets.

Totesport has, however, introduced an innovative text betting service, which is available for tote betting and fixed odds betting on all sports. To use the service, you need to register – simply text the word “register”, followed by your username, to the number 60021.

Once you’ve done this, you can use simple text messages to place bets quickly and easily, from any location. To place a bet via a text message, you send your bet stake, bet type and selection to 60021.

You can use a range of abbreviations to specify the bet type you want to place. For example, you can use “S”, “SGL” or “single” for a single bet and “first goalscorer”, “first goal”, “FG” or “FGS” for a first goalscorer football bet.

An example of a full text message is 15 win Liverpool (meaning that you’re staking £15 on a win by Liverpool).

You’ll receive a receipt on your phone, as well as notification if your bet wins.

Totesport customer service
3

Totesport’s main competitors provide 24-hour customer service, 7 days a week. Totesport, however, provides customer service between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. It also doesn’t offer a live chat feature – you can contact customer service via e-mail or phone – and service is available only in English. Once you do get through, Totesport’s agents are courteous and efficient.

One area where Totesport really falls down is its accepted payment methods. These days, even fairly small online bookmakers tend to offer their customers a wide range of alternatives. With Totesport, however, you can deposit and withdraw funds only using cash cards or, as a more recent addition, Skrill (previously known as Moneybookers).

Also, note that Totesport accepts only GBP and euros, making it less suitable for international punters.

The bottom line

Despite some room for improvement, Totesport is a good addition to the set of online bookmakers you use, especially if your interests lie in UK and Irish horse racing. Also keep an eye on its football specials.
