About the 1000 Guineas

The 1000 Guineas is the fillies’ equivalent of the 2000 Guineas. While the latter is open to fillies and has been won by fillies in the past, the majority of trainers now prefer to enter their most talented filly milers into the 1000 Guineas.

First run at Newmarket in April 1814, just five years after the introduction of the 2000 Guineas, the 1000 Guineas took several decades to establish itself as one of the leading races in the UK. It went on to be recognized as one of the season’s five Classic races, and has inspired imitation events across the world, from Germany to Japan.

A number of fillies that have won the 1000 Guineas have gone on to subsequently win the Epsom Oaks, and a fraction of these have claimed the Fillies Triple Crown by winning the St Leger. While three horses have achieved the 1000 Guineas/Oaks double since 2000 the last filly to take the Fillies Triple Crown was Oh So Sharp, who became the fifth horse to do so in 1985.

The 1000 Guineas is covered on selected TV and streaming services and on radio.

Betting on the 1000 Guineas

Betting on the 1000 Guineas is beset with similar challenges to betting on the 2000 Guineas. Both races see markets favouring top performing juveniles from the previous season, while major gains in power and pace often sees horses who undeperformed as juveniles assert themselves powerfully when they compete in their first races as 3-year-olds.

It is therefore unsurprising to find that favourites rarely win the 1000 Guineas and that upsets by long shots are relatively common – for example, Billesdon Brook won the race at odds of 66/1 in 2018. This means the best betting advice for this race is to ignore the market, and the favourite in particular, and look out for horses who showed improvements (and not necessarily wins) towards the end of their juvenile seasons.

Also restrict your bets to horses trading within range of a profitable each-way bet. Horses priced under 4/1 rarely win the 1000 Guineas.
