About the 2000 Guineas
The 2000 Guineas Stakes is the first Group 1 race for 3-year-old milers of the flat season. One of the UK’s oldest races, and one of the five Classics, the 2000 Guineas benchmarks the performance of the current year’s crop of star 3-year-olds. While the race is open to both colts and fillies, it is typically contested by colts with top fillies instead targeting the 1000 Guineas.
Run at Newmarket Racecourse, the 2000 Guineas has a history dating back to 1809. The race has been considered one of the most important in the UK since early in its history, and has spawned a host of knock-off races in Ireland, Australia and even Japan. It is also one of the richest races in the UK, with the race winner clearing £525,000 in winnings.
Some of the greatest racehorses of all time have competed in, and won, the 2,000 Guineas, including the likes of Nijinsky, Brigadier Gerard, Sea The Stars and Frankel.
The 2000 Guineas is covered on selected TV and streaming services and on radio.
Betting on the 2000 Guineas
The 2000 Guineas is one of the trickier Group 1 races of the season to bet on, as many of the entries will be running their first race as 3-year-olds. While it is tempting to back horses that excelled in their 2-year-old season, it is common for otherwise unremarkable juveniles to improve considerably as they move into 3-year-old age category races.
This is unlikely to be reflected in the markets which will typically get behind horses that impressed as juveniles. This is despite the fact that it is far more common for the top 3-year-old colt of the season to announce their arrival by taking a first victory in this race than it is for champion 2-year-olds to maintain their form from the previous season. This is worth keeping in mind as the favourite will typically be both a champion juvenile and significantly underpriced.
The most reliable strategy for this race is therefore to steer clear of favourites. Instead focus on horses who are priced high enough to return a profit on an each-way bet if they only manage to place. Also avoid rank outsiders – while the market does poorly at picking the winner, it is fairly good at ruling out non-contenders. Focus your bets on the 4/1 to 16/1 margin, and look out for entries that have shown steady improvement in their last couple of races.
