About the Dante Stakes
First run in 1958, the Dante Stakes has evolved into one of the most important Epsom Derby trial races run in the UK.
Since its inception just shy of one in ten Dante Stakes winners has gone on to win the Epsom Derby, with a number of Dante Stakes winners also taking the Irish Derby.
With its elevation to Group 2 status in 1980 it became an important race in its own right, and frequently attracts the top rank of 3 year old middle distance talent in the UK.
Betting on the Dante Stakes
While the Dante Stakes attracts top talent, it’s position in the season makes it an unusually tough race to call.
Most entries will be competing over a distance greater than a mile for the first time, and will furthermore be likely to demonstrate the type of sudden shifts in ability that accompany horses as they mature from their juvenile to 3-year-old seasons.
This is not a bad race to defer to the markets when narrowing down your betting options. Horses priced over 10/1 rarely win the race, and favourites tend to be both underpriced and unlikely to win. Instead the winner is typically found priced between the 4/1 and 6/1 margin on race day.
