2024 Gimcrack Stakes Preview
The Strikin Viking finds himself starting another big race as favourite despite losing in the Richmond Stakes by half a length earlier this month. His price of 7/2 is more conservative this time round, and he’ll probably place, but there’s plenty of talent in this field to beat him.
Molecomb Stakes winner, Big Mojo, looks most likely to do so. In his short career to date he’s won at Beverley before taking the Group 3 win at Glorious Goodwood. At 5/1 he’ll pay a profit on each-way bets if he places.
There are a handful of unbeaten juveniles in the field for the Gimcrack Stakes, and of these Shadow Of Light stands out. He won at Newmarket earlier this month and has taken both his wins over 6 furlongs by comfortable margins. At 13/2 he’s great value to at least make the places.

About the Gimcrack Stakes
The Gimcrack Stakes was first contested in 1846. Originally targeted at all juveniles, it was restricted to colts in 1897. The race is named after Gimcrack, a champion racehorse during the 1700s. Today the race carries Group 2 status and has been won by dozens of horses who have gone on to success at Group 1 level in the UK.
Gimcrack Stakes Betting
A 6 furlong sprint for juveniles is always a tough call, but you’ll have relatively in-depth form information to work with when betting on a juvenile race this late in the season. This is reflected in the market where although favourites will tend to be overpriced and only occasionally win, wins by rank outsiders are rare. The top two to three horses in the field will typically produce the winner, so careful analysis of relative merits of these horses is the best way to make a selection in this race.
