Key Races to Watch on Day 2
While every race on Friday offers intrigue and quality, these events are the standout contests on Day 2 of the Aintree Festival:
The Melling Steeple Chase
A crown jewel of the Friday card, the Melling Chase regularly draws some of the best two-and-a-half milers in training. With past winners including greats like Sprinter Sacre and Fakir D’Oudairies, it’s a race of high class and tactical brilliance that often delivers a memorable finish.
The Sefton Novices’ Hurdle
A key test for future stayers, the Sefton is where we often see the next generation of long-distance hurdlers break through. Its grueling three-mile trip makes it a true stamina test, and the quality of winners historically has been very high.
The Topham Handicap Chase
Few races capture the Aintree spirit quite like the Topham. Run over the iconic Grand National fences, it mixes the thrill of a big-field handicap with the spectacle of those famous obstacles. It’s not only a betting highlight but also a fantastic visual spectacle for racegoers and viewers alike.
The Top Novices’ Hurdle
This Grade 1 race has a strong record of producing future stars. Horses that impressed in the Supreme at Cheltenham often turn up here, and the Aintree test provides a new tactical angle, making it a fascinating clash for form watchers.
