About the Aintree Bowl Chase
Initiated in 1984, the Aintree Bowl Steeple Chase was conceived as a secondary opportunity for horses that either did not win or could not compete in the Cheltenham Gold Cup the previous month. Its first edition was sponsored by Perrier-Jouët, earning it the name Perrier-Jouët Champagne Cup. This was followed by a three-year sponsorship from Whitbread, during which it was known as the Whitbread Gold Label Cup.
Over the years, the race has attracted various sponsors, including Martell (renamed the Martell Cup and the Martell Cognac Cup) and Betfair (rebranded as the Betfair Bowl). In 2008, Totesport took on the sponsorship, dubbing it the Totesport Bowl, until Betfred assumed the role in 2012 after acquiring The Tote in 2011. From the 2017 edition onwards, Betway has been the sponsor. The 2023 race marked a special occasion, being titled the Alder Hey Aintree Bowl in celebration of the 21st anniversary of the collaboration between Aintree Racecourse and the Alder Hey Children’s Charity.
The event was elevated to Grade 1 status in 2010 and is now a highlight of the opening day of the Grand National meeting, which spans three days.
