About the Lockinge Stakes
The Lockinge Stakes was established in 1958, named after a neighbouring parish in Newbury. The race has enjoyed a steady increase in status since its inception, achieving Group 1 status in 1995 before being included in the British Champions Series.
The race attracts the top tier of miler talent in Europe, and the winner will typically go on to compete in the Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot later in the season. Notable horses to have won this race incude Frankel in 2012 and Brigadier Gerard in 1972.
Betting on the Lockinge Stakes
The Lockinge Stakes will usually attract a clutch of the top milers in the UK and Ireland, and it is not unusual to find winners of major mile races as well as the season’s dominant 4-year-old and above miler in attendence.
This is reflected in the betting markets with favourites often priced under Evens. Favourites also have an excellent strike race in the race.
Backing the favourite is therefore not the worst strategy in this particular race, particularly if the favourite comes in priced over Evens. In years where the favourite trades below Evens bets are best focused on higher priced entries capable of making the places.
