The Scottish Grand National is a National Hunt handicap steeplechase with horses jumping 27 fences. It is the centerpiece of the two-day long Ayr Scottish Grand National Festival.
2025 Scottish Grand National Preview
Just over 20 runners will line up to compete in the 2025 Grand National, with three horses set to start the race priced under the 10/1 margin.
These are led by Chosen Witness, who has competed only 3 times over fences achieving a best result of 3rd place. On his one outing over 3 miles he unseated his rider.
Macdermott is the reigning Scottish Grand National winner but has not impressed since taking that win, finishing just one of his last four races. He’s not running close to his preferred weight, but could still make an appearance in the places.
Olympic Man is in the only horse in the top three in the betting who has shown any form, winning his last outing. However, given that this win was achieved over almost half the distance he’ll run at Ayr, his odds are as spectulative as the rest.
Which means that the Scottish Grand National is ripe for backing an outsider. Of these Magna Sam stands out at 25/1. He comes to Ayr on the back on the back of a win at Musselburgh over the Scottish Grand National distance. He’ll also be carrying the same weight he had onboard at Musselburgh. Back him each-way and he offers unbeatable value in this field.

The Scottish Grand National is Scotland’s highest profile jumps event, and the Scottish version of the Grand National at Aintree. Run over a distance just short of 4 miles the race takes place in April every, following the running of the Aintree Grand National. The race features 27 fences.
As a Grade 3 handicap the Scottish Grand National tends to attract the upper tier of handicap racehorses competing in handicaps in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and can occasionally attract horses who compete above this level in non-handicap races.
The event is one of the oldest jumps races on the Scottish racing calendar, and was first contested in 1858 at a course near Houston, Renfrewshire. The race was soon moved to Bogside racecourse where it was run for almost a century before being transferred to Ayr Racecourse in 1966.
Unlike the Aintree Grand National which has produced only triple winner, three horses have won the Scottish Grand National three times, with this feat last achieved while the race was still at Bogside in 1956.

Betting on the Scottish Grand National
The Scottish Grand National, despite its prestige, is a typical Grade 3 handicap with a bit of extra difficulty added by the length of the race and number of fences jumped.
As such you’re best off selecting an entry that will pay off generously on an each-way bet if it places, as each-way payouts are usually extended to 4 or 5 places for the race, with some bookies paying additional places on promotional offers.
In terms of what to look for, a win over 4 miles is good as it proves an entry’s staying credentials. Previous wins at Ayr are also handy. Ground conditions have a massive impact on races over this distance, so wait until race day and match your entry’s ground preferences to what Ayr’s weather is serving up on the day.
Finally, check that your entry’s assigned weight for the Scottish Grand National is within a couple of pounds of a weight they have previously carried to victory. Recent form is less important than may be the case for other race formats – but if you can find a horse that ticks all the boxes above and has a habit of finding the places in steeplechases, you’ve got a solid bet.
