2024 Champagne Stakes Preview

An in-form field lines up for the 2024 Champagne Stakes, headlined by Chancellor. He’s won two of his three career starts, but has not competed in pattern races. At 7/4 he’s underpriced against this field.

Righthere Rightnow has competed just once in his career, beating a field of 12 by 5 lengths. That performance was good enough to secure him a price under 4/1, where he offers no each-way value.

Monumetal is priced at 12/1, but stands out as the fastest improving horse in the field, finishing tenth, second and first in his three races to date. The last was won by over 2 lengths, suggesting he provides decent each-way value at his price.

About the Champagne Stakes

The Champagne Stakes has been contested since 1823, when it was first run as a juvenile race for horses of both genders over a mile. It was briefly run over a sprint distance before its current length was set in 1962. It was restricted to colts and geldings in 1988. The Champagne Stakes is an important trial race for the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes, run in October.

Champagne Stakes Betting

Due to its position in the season, the Champagne Stakes yields more form information than is the case for many other juvenile races. This is reflected in the prices of recent winners, with wins by horses over 10/1 a rarity. What makes betting challenging is that winners tend to emerge from beneath the 4/1 margin, which rules out each-way bets as a good strategy.

Furthermore, the favourite is not a shoe-in for the win. As such you’ll need to assess the relative merits of each horse in the field, looking out for horses making steady improvements over the course of the season. An each-way bet on a strong contender priced 4/1 to 10/1 will put you in line to win if your selection only manages a place.
