The Betfred May Hill Stakes is a Group 2 race for two-year-old fillies and mares. The race is run over a distance of 1 mile at the St Leger Festival.

2024 May Hill Stakes Preview

The May Hill Stakes has produced an under-Evens favourite in 2024, with Desert Flower emerging as a massive antepost favourite. This is thanks to two wins from two career races, both achieved by a handy margin at Newmarket. Given that she’s never run over a mile, she’s underpriced at 5/6.

Irish filly, January, has run four races in her career, winning a Listed race at Tipperary last time out and finishing third in a Group 2 prior to that. She’s never finished outside the places and offers good each-way value at 13/2.

Serving With Style is the other unbeaten horse in the field, with wins at Carlisle and Goodwood. While those were achieved by slim margins, her price of 50/1 is a tantalizing option for an each-way punt.

About the May Hill Stakes

The May Hill Stakes has been contested since 1976. The race is named after the star filly of the same name, who won the Park Hill Stakes in 1975. Originally a Group 3 race, the May Hill Stakes was promoted to Group 2 status in 2003. It is not unusual for the winner of the May Hill Stakes to compete in the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile later in the season.

The May Hill Stakes sees many of the contestants tested over a mile for the first time in their careers, which adds to the unpredictability you’d expect from a race for juveniles. While horses priced around Evens have a decent strike rate in the race, winners tend to be priced between Evens and 6/1. You’ll need to weigh up the merits of the individual horses in field on race day and look out for genuine contenders priced high enough to provide each-way value.
