About the Sceptre Stakes
The Sceptre Stakes was first run in 1986. The event was named after multiple Classics winner, Sceptre, who competed at the turn of the 19th century. Originally run over a mile and carrying a Listed rating, the races was cut to 7 furlongs and promoted to Group 3 status in 2011.
Sceptre Stakes
The Sceptre Stakes tends to attract horses accomplished at Group 3 level and those taking a step up from Listed or handicap races. This results in a relatively high degree of unpredictability, compounded by the relatively short distance run in the race. Of the pattern races run during the St Leger Festival, this is the best opportunity to back an outsider. Wins by the favourite are rare, and horses priced over 10/1 routinely win the race.
