The St Leger Stakes is a race for three-year-old colts and is the oldest and longest of the British Classics races. Run over a distance of 1 mile, 6 furlongs and 115 yards, it is the highlight of the St Leger Festival.
2024 St Leger Stakes Preview
Illinois has run five pattern races this season, finishing outside the places just once and winning the Group 2 Queen’s Vase over 1 mile 6 furlongs at Royal Ascot. While he’s in with a decent chance in a relatively weak St Leger field, he doesn’t look worth his price of 2/1.
Jan Brueghel heads to Doncaster with two Group 3 wins in a row, but has never run further than 1 mile 4 furlongs. He’s certainly in with a chance, and if you can get him each-way at 4/1 he’ll refund your each-way stake if he only manages to place.
You Got To Me is the highest rated horse in the field for the St Leger and a winner at Group 1 level this season. She won the Irish Oaks in July and then missed out on the Yorkshire Oaks by 3/4 of a length a month later. She’s genuine class and hard to ignore at 5/1 despite being untested over 1 mile 6 furlongs.

About the St Leger Stakes
The St Leger Stakes is the oldest of the English Classics, having been established in 1776. Named after Anthony St Leger, an English army office and politician, it was originally run over a distance of 2 miles. Although the St Leger is the final leg of the English Triple Crown, it has become rare for horses who have won the Epsom Derby and 2,000 Guineas double to compete in the race.

The St Leger Stakes is one of the most hotly contested stayers races of the season, and it is not unusual for two to three top class stayers to enter the race. This is borne out by the odds of the winners over recent years, with upsets rare and favourites routinely taking the title. However, backing the favourite is by no means a winning strategy. Instead you’ll need to focus your attention on horses priced 4/1 or lower and consider their relative merits when picking a potential winner.
