The Coronation Cup

The Coronation Cup is one of the UK’s premier middle distance races for thoroughbred horses aged four years or older. It is run at Epsom Downs on the first day of the Derby Festival meeting.

2024 Coronation Cup Preview

Reigning Coronation Cup champion Emily Upjohn will start the 2024 race as the favourite despite failing to impress in her last two races. Trading close to Evens she offers little value.

At 7/2 Luxembourg looks like another underpriced entry, having last won in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at Curragh last year in May.

It is serial Group 3 winner, Hamish, who looks like the value bet in the field trading at around 10/1. He’s a proven performer over 1 mile 4 furlongs, and is unbeaten over 1 mile 4 furlongs in his last three outings.

About the Coronation Cup

The Coronation Cup was inaugurated in 1902 to mark the crowning of King Edward VII. Previously, Epsom had hosted a similar event called the Epsom Gold Cup, which welcomed horses aged three and up. During the world wars, the Coronation Cup was relocated to different venues, being held at Newmarket during 1915-16 and 1943-45, and at Newbury in 1941.

The race takes place on the opening day of Epsom’s two-day Derby Festival, and is run on an earlier time slot than the Epsom Oaks. It covers the same distance as both the Oaks and the Epsom Derby and often attracts horses that participated in either of those races in prior seasons.
