About the Coronation Cup

The Coronation Cup was inaugurated in 1902 to mark the crowning of King Edward VII. Previously, Epsom had hosted a similar event called the Epsom Gold Cup, which welcomed horses aged three and up. During the world wars, the Coronation Cup was relocated to different venues, being held at Newmarket during 1915-16 and 1943-45, and at Newbury in 1941.

The race takes place on the opening day of Epsom’s two-day Derby Festival, and is run on an earlier time slot than the Epsom Oaks. It covers the same distance as both the Oaks and the Epsom Derby and often attracts horses that participated in either of those races in prior seasons.

Betting on the Coronation Cup

You’ll have a wealth of form data to work with in the Coronation Cup due to age of the horses in the field. The race attracts top thoroughbred talent and often features more than one entry with previous Group 1 wins, as such the favourites can often dip beneath the Evens mark and it is not unusual for favourites to win the race. Wins by horses priced under 4/1 are the norm. This race needs to be treated on a case-by-case basis – if a champion racehorse takes favourite billing it is worth a punt. Where no convincing favourite emerges, value is to be found with each-way bets on highly rated horses who are likely to place.
