The Princess Elizabeth Stakes is the 1 mile open age fillies and mares highlight of the Derby Festival. The race evolved from the Victress Stakes, which was established in 1995, and was renamed in 2001 before being promoted to Group 3 level in 2004. While the race tends to attract the third tier of filly and mare thoroughbred talent in Europe and the UK, it has produced some notable winners, including Rafha, who went on to win the Group 1 Prix Diane.
Betting on the Princess Elizabeth Stakes
The Princess Elizabeth Stakes rarely produces major upsets. While favourites win the race only occasionally, it’s unusual for horses priced over 10/1 to take a win. The race is also monopolized by 4-year-olds. The best betting strategy is therefore to back a form 4-year-old priced in the 4/1-10/1 price bracket with an each-way bet.
