The Falmouth Stakes

The Falmouth Stakes is a Group 1 race for 3-year-old and above fillies and mares. It is run over a mile at Newmarket Racecourse every July.

2024 Falmouth Stakes Preview

Porta Fortuna heads to the 2024 Falmouth Stakes as the antepost favourite following her win in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. She is a deserved favourite, but offers little value at close to Evens.

Up against the favourite is Running Lion who was a winner in the Group 2 Duke of Cambridge stakes at Royal Ascot last month. At 3/1 she isn’t going to pay a profit on each-way bets if she places and may not be in the same league as the favourite.

A Liliac Rolla, however, provides some good value at 5/1. A second place finisher in the Irish 1,000 Guineas, she won a Group 3 earlier this season and certainly has the ability to make the places and even upset the favourite in the Falmouth Stakes.

About the Falmouth Stakes

First raced in 1911, the Falmouth Stakes is over a century old. Named in honour of the 6th Viscount Falmouth, the Falmouth Stakes was briefly raced as the Child Stakes. In 1987 the race reverted back to its original name when it was promoted to Group 2 status, and in 2004 it was promoted to Group 1 status, becoming the second top rated race on the Newmarket July Festival schedule.

Since being promoted to Group 1 status, the Falmouth Stakes has tended to attract top 3 and 4-year-old milers. Some of the most talented filly and mare milers in the UK have won the race, including the likes of Integral and Goldikova.

Betting on the Falmouth Stakes

Betting on the Falmouth Stakes is tricky due to the presence of multiple champion milers in the field, the best of whom will often be priced close to, or below Evens. Wins by the favourite happen frequently, however, it is more common for the winner to be priced between 4/1 and 10/1. As such you’re better of looking for value on each-way bets and finding a top horse who is likely to place rather than getting behind an underpriced favourite for this race.
