The July Cup Stakes is considered to be the pinnacle of European sprint racing, contested by 3-year-old and above sprinters over a distance of 6 furlongs at Newmarket Racecourse every July.
2024 July Cup
Inisherin headlines the 2024 July Cup fresh off a win in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot. With two wins on the trot he’s as close to a banker as you can get for the July Cup, but still looks a touch underpriced at around 2/1.
Vandeek is yet to come good on the promise he showed during his 2-year-old season when he won a pair of Group 1 sprints. He was also beaten in the Sandy Lane Stakes by the favourite earlier this season. However, at 9/2 he at least offers value on the places if you back him each-way.
The experienced Kinross is no stranger to success at the top level, having won several Group 1 and Group 2 races. He came second in his only race this season, and the 7-year-old looks a value bet at 7/1 if you back him each-way.

About the July Cup Stakes
The July Cup is one of the oldest sprint races in the UK, dating back to 1876 when the inaugural race was won by a horse owned by Queen Victoria. The race has held Group 1 status since 1978, and was run as a leg of the Global Sprint Challenge between 2008 and 2017.
During its long and illustrious history the July Cup has developed into the most prestigious sprint prize in European flat racing. In the past three decades a majority of race winners have gone on to rank as the top European sprinter in the World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings.
Betting on the July Cup
The July Cup is an exhilirating sprint to watch due to the quality of the field in attendance, but is something of a racing lottery for the same reason. Even the enthusiasm of the general public rarely pushes the antepost favourite’s price below 2/1 and it’s common for the favourite to start the race priced over 4/1.
This can present an unusual opportunity to back a top rated racehorse at over 4/1 and still make a profit if it only manages to make the places. If the favourite drops below this margin, focus on horses priced under 16/1 as these tend to produce the majority of race winners, and can provide solid value on each-way bets even if they finish in the places.
