The Betfair Sprint Cup Stakes is a Group 1 race for horses aged three or older. The race is run at Haydock racecourse over a distance of 6 furlongs and is the highlight of the Sprint Cup Festival.
2024 Haydock Sprint Cup Stakes Preview
Commonwealth Cup winner, Inisherin, failed to add a second Group 1 title to his record at Newmarket in July after finishing 5th in the July Cup Stakes.
He nevertheless starts the Sprint Cup as a favourite thanks to his indisputable class and a Group 2 win at Haydock earlier in the season. At 4/1 he’s great value for a favourite.
Elite Status is priced as Inisherin’s main rival. He’s never won at Group 1 level, but has two Group 3 titles to his name. At 7/2 he’s decent value, but not a standout option in this field.
Swingalong looks a much more interesting contender. He finished second in the July Cup Stakes, beating Inisherin, and also took second in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Ascot a month earlier. At 15/2 he’s our value pick in the field.

About the Haydock Sprint Cup
The Haydock Sprint Cup was first contested in 1966 as an event open to 2-year-old and older racehorses. The race was switched to Haydock’s straight course in 1986, and achieved Group 1 status two years later. In 1994 the age qualifications for the Haydock Sprint Cup were changed to exclude 2-year-olds. The race is the most prestigious event hosted by the Lancashire racing community.
Sprint Cup Betting
The Sprint Cup Cup does not always attract the top tier of sprinting talent in the UK, and is often targeted by horses who have achieved success at Group 2 level. This is reflected in the markets, which are relatively conservative when pricing the favourite. Despite this, favourites have a respectable strike race in the rate. The markets are fairly good at picking out the genuine contenders, and a good strategy in this race is place an each way bet on a promising horse in the 4/1 to 10/1 odds margin.
