In an each-way goalscorer bet, half your stake is placed on a standard first goalscorer bet. This is the bet that a player you’ve selected will score the first goal of a match. The second half of your stake is wagered on the same player scoring either the second or third goal of the match.
Either result guarantees a return, but the return is higher if the player scores the first goal.
Typically the potential return for the second part of the bet is about a quarter of the return you can win on the first part.
Example of an each-way goalscorer bet
Suppose you stake £10 on a player in an each-way goalscorer bet. The odds for the bet are as follows:
- 12/1 that the player will score the first goal of a match
- odds of 3/1 that the player will score the second or third goal.
If the player you’ve backed scores the first goal of the match plus either the second or third goal, you’ll be paid out £130 for the first part of your bet (winnings of £120 plus your refunded stake of £10) and £40 for the second part (winnings of £30 plus your refunded stake of £10). This would give you total winnings of £150.
If the player scored only the second or third goal of the match, for example, you’d receive £50 (winnings of £40 plus your original stake of £10). Of course if the player doesn’t succeed in scoring any of the first three goals of the match, the bet loses and you’ll forfeit your stake.
