The Lucky 31 bet

lucky 31

The Lucky 31 bet is like a Canadian/Super Yankee bet, but comprises five additional single bets placed on the relevant selections.

While a Lucky 31 bet has many sub-bets, it is not a particularly complicated bet to place or to understand.

Most bookies allow you to automatically place a Lucky 31, including all relevant sub-bets, once you have made five selections in the betting markets.

While the Lucky 31 Bet can be very lucrative when all selections win, it can be an expensive bet if you use large stakes. In addition, three selections usually need to win to generate a profit.

What is a Lucky 13 bet?

A Lucky 13 bet is a combination of 31 individual bets which covers all available bet combinations that are available when making five selections.

These include five singles, 10 doubles, 10 trebles, five four-folds and one five-fold.

The same stake is wagered on every selection in a Lucky 31, which means the base stake used to place the bet is multiplied by a factor of 31.

Sub-bet Lucky 31 selections Number of bets
Singles 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 5
Doubles 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5, 2-3, 2-4, 2-5, 3-4, 3-5, 4-5 10

How does a Lucky 31 bet work?

To place a Lucky 31 bet you need to make five selections in the betting markets. You do not need to bet on a single sport, event or betting market, and can combine any five selections in your bet.

When placing a Lucky 31 bet you should only bet on selections that you are confident can win. Taking a chance on a long shot to get higher odds does not make sense for this bet type.

Once you have made your five selections there is no need to create each of the sub-bets used in the Lucky 31.

Simply making five selections at an online bookie will automatically pull up a Lucky 31 bet as an option on the betting slip, usually under Multiple bets.

From there on it’s easy. Enter the stake you want to use as your base bet, bearing in mind it will be multiplied by 31, and place you bet.

The only tricky thing about placing a Lucky 31 bet is understanding all the permutations of how the bet will pay out.

To give you an example, assume you place a £31 total stake on five horses all priced 2/1.

  • If one horse wins you will get a payout of £3 for an overall loss of £28
  • If two horses win you will get a payout of £15 for an overall loss of £16
  • If three horses win you will get a payout of £63 for an overall profit of £32
  • If four horses win you will get a payout of £255 for an overall profit of £224
  • If five horses win you will get a payout of £2013 for an overall profit of £992.

Keep in mind that the odds on the entries that do win will impact how many selections are required to win to profit from a Lucky 31 bet.

For example, if only a single selection wins its event at a price of 33/1  on a £31 Lucky 31 then that single win will pay out £34, generating an overall profit of £2 on the bet.
