About the Red Rum Handicap Chase

The Red Rum Handicap Chase pays tribute to Red Rum, the legendary horse that clinched the Grand National title three times in the 1970s. Previously known as the Aintree Chase and first run in 1976, the race was renamed in honor of Red Rum in 1997.

Originally run as a limited handicap, where the range of weights carried by horses was narrowly defined, the race was elevated to Grade 2 status in 1991. It transitioned to a standard handicap format in 2001, at which point it adopted its current name. Initially categorized at the Listed level, the race received an upgrade, this time to Grade 3 status, in 2004.
