About the Jersey Stakes
The Jersey Stakes is the signature 7 furlong race for 3-year-olds at the Royal Ascot meeting. The race distance covered is unusual for the 3-year-old circuit. This is the result of the fact that the race was added as the second leg of the Triennial Stakes in 1919.
The Triennial Stakes was a series of three races that was intended to stretch the stamina of the contestants over progressively longer distances over consecutive seasons, with contestants running over 5 furlongs as 2-year-olds, 7 furlongs as 3-year-olds and 2 miles as 4-year-olds.
Betting on the Jersey Stakes
Run mid-way between a sprint distance and a mile, the Jersey Stakes can attract both sprinters and milers. It’s position early in the season also means that entries may have thin form records. Horses of apparently modest abilities with poor records can also improve considerably in this race. This makes picking a winner a major challenge, which is reflected by the pricing of recent winners.
Over the last several years winners have ranged from antepost favourites to horses priced over the 20/1 margin. Notably, favourites are often priced over 4/1 and frequently find the places, which means you can make a profit off each way bets when they place. You can also feel comfortable looking for each-way value among horses priced over 20/1, with these regularly winning or placing.
