About the Hardwicke Stakes
The Hardwicke Stakes is a Group 2 race for 4-year-old and above racehorses. The race carries Group 2 status and is run over 1 mile 4 furlongs, making it the Royal Meeting’s premier race over this distance for horses over the age of 4. The top horses in the field usually return to Ascot later in the season to compete in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
Betting on the Hardwicke Stakes
It’s unusual for the antepost favourite or the top rated horse in the field to win the Hardwicke Stakes, even though horses with Group 1 wins or places regularly compete in the race. Instead it’s horses of more modest ability who tend to prevail, rewarding their backers at generous odds. A top two finish last time out is important, and also keep an eye out for an appearance by the winner of the Yorkshire Cup as winners of that race tend to do well in the Hardwicke Stakes.
