Liverpool Hurdle

The Liverpool Hurdle is a National Hunt race with thirteen hurdles which is open to horses aged four years or older. The race is run on the final day of the Aintree Grand National Festival.

2024 Liverpool Hurdle Preview

Some top hurdling talent is competing in the 2024 Liverpool Hurdle, with Cheltenham Stayers’ Hurdle second place finisher Flooring Porter starting as favourite.

Second in the betting is Sire Du Berlais, winner of the Cheltenham Festival’s Stayers’ Hurdle and the Liverpool last season. He’s yet to regain his form this season but is trading within range of a profitable each-way bet if he places.

Crambo ran a disappointing race in the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham last month but was a winner in the Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot in December. He’s also worth a look for an each-way bet while his price is over the 4/1 margin.

About the Liverpool Hurdle

Launched in 1974, the Liverpool Hurdle originally took place at Ascot, where it was known as the Long Distance Hurdle and covered a distance of 3 miles. At that time, it was recognized as a Grade 2 event.

In 2004, the race moved to Aintree and was renamed in honor of the adjacent city, Liverpool. Along with the relocation, its course was lengthened by 110 yards.

Elevated to Grade 1 status in 2010, the Liverpool Hurdle is now a highlight on the last day of the Grand National meeting’s three-day span. Before 2013, it traditionally kicked off the meeting as the first race.

Competitors often include horses that have previously participated in the Stayers’ Hurdle.
