About the Liverpool Hurdle
Launched in 1974, the Liverpool Hurdle originally took place at Ascot, where it was known as the Long Distance Hurdle and covered a distance of 3 miles. At that time, it was recognized as a Grade 2 event.
In 2004, the race moved to Aintree and was renamed in honor of the adjacent city, Liverpool. Along with the relocation, its course was lengthened by 110 yards.
Elevated to Grade 1 status in 2010, the Liverpool Hurdle is now a highlight on the last day of the Grand National meeting’s three-day span. Before 2013, it traditionally kicked off the meeting as the first race.
Competitors often include horses that have previously participated in the Stayers’ Hurdle.
