Melling Chase

The Melling Chase is a National Hunt steeplechase over sixteen fences for horses aged five years or older. The race is run on the second day of the Aintree Grand National Festival.

2024 Melling Chase Preview

Punters are keeping the faith in Jonbon, who finished second in the Clarence House Chase at Cheltenham in January after starting as 1/4 favourite.

He comes into this race trading close to Evens, with Pic D’Orhy and Protektorat fancied as the two horses most likely to beat him.

Protektorat in particular looks like a strong candidate, given his 4 length win the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham last month.

Pic D’Orhly comes into the race following his win at the Grade 1 Ascot Chase in February. Either of these horses offers good value on each-way bets while you can get them at 4/1 or higher.

About the Melling Chase

Named after the adjacent village of Melling, renowned for the Melling Road that intersects the racecourse, the Melling Chase was inaugurated in 1991. It has consistently maintained Grade 1 status since its inception. Competitors in the race frequently include horses that participated in either the Queen Mother Champion Chase or the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival the preceding month.
