The Sefton Novices Hurdle is a race for staying hurdlers aged four years or older featuring 13 hurdles. The race is run on the second day of the Aintree Grand National Festival.
2025 Sefton Novices Hurdle Preview
The Sefron Novices Hurdle has attracted a strong field in 2025 with several likely contenders. Leading the markets is Mister Meggit, who was a winner at Aintree last time out after starting as favourite. Priced at 7/2 he’s a touch underpriced given that he’s never competed over 3 miles.
Better value comes in the form of Battle Born Lad, who was won both his races this season, including a Grade 2 over 3 miles last time out. At 11/2 he’s the best value in the field if you back him each-way.
Moon Rocket is the only other horse in the field to have competed over 3 miles. He’s not finished outside the top two in his last five races, and at 12/1 is also a decent each-way option.

About the Sefton Novices Hurdle
Named after the adjacent village of Melling, renowned for the Melling Road that intersects the racecourse, the Melling Chase was inaugurated in 1991. It has consistently maintained Grade 1 status since its inception. Competitors in the race frequently include horses that participated in either the Queen Mother Champion Chase or the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival the preceding month.
