2025 Ascot Gold Cup Preview

The UK’s premier stayers’ race takes center stage on day two of Royal Ascot 2025 with no fewer than three entries priced under 3/1.

Leading these is Trawlerman, winner of the Henry II Stakes in at Sandown in May. He’s a proven stayer and consistently finds the places, but is by no means a sure thing at 2/1.

Ormonde Stakes winner, Illinois, is second in the betting at 5/2. He’s been in strong form in his last several races and is two wins from two runs since October. However, he’s unproven over 2 miles. which suggests he’s underpriced.

Candelari won over 1 mile 7.5 furlongs at Longchamp last time out, so has decent stayers credentials, with that win coming at Group 1 level to boot. At 11/4 he’s the best value of the favourites.

For a value each-way bet you can’t ignore Coltrane. Priced at 40/1 he’s won over the Ascot Gold Cup distance previously and has been in decent form in recent races.
