2024 Princes of Wales’s Stakes Preview & Tips
The Prince of Wales’s Stakes has produced two short odds favourites, led by Auguste Rodin, who finished second in the Tattersalls Gold Cup in Ireland last time out.
The favourite has already claimed a slew of major Group 1 wins, including the Breeders’ Cup Turf, the Epsom Derby and the Irish Derby. However, he is not the most consistent of horses and doesn’t offer much value trading close to Evens.
Not far off the favourite is Inspiral, who also has several Group 1 wins to her credit, including the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf and the Sun Chariot Stakes. She is best known as a miler, but has won her only race run over 1 mile 2 furlongs.
The only other horse the markets have tagged as having a serious chance is Horizon Dore. He’s run most of his races in France over 1 mile 2 furlongs and has collected a handful of Group 2 and 3 wins during his career. At 7/1 he’s an option, but not quite a value bet.
Instead, the value bet in the field appears to be the 5-year-old Alfaila. He’s won the Group 2 York Stakes so far this season and won the Group 1 Darley Stakes at Newmarket at the end of last year. At 10/1 he offers value on each-way bets – and he’s certainly good enough to place.

About the Prince of Wales’s Stakes
The Prince of Wales’s Stakes is one of the most prestigious races at Royal Ascot, carrying the largest purse at the meeting. The Group 1 race is run over 1 mile 2 furlongs and is open to 4-year-old and above racehorses. The Prince of Wales’s Stakes popularity is based on the fact that it pitches champion middle distance racehorses of different age groups against each other, and typically features several winners of the previous season’s big Group 1 races for 3-year-olds.
Betting on the Prince of Wales’s Stakes
The presence of several star middle distance racehorses of different ages in a single field makes the Prince of Wales’s Stakes a challenging race to call. The markets usually do a good job of singling out the reasonable contenders, but wins by antepost favourites are infrequent. A previous Group 1 win is one marker of a potential champion, but there are other broad trends in the race to draw on, and you’re best served by making each way selections among the horses priced under the 10/1 margin.
