The Heinz bet

A Canadian bet, also known as a Super Yankee, is a combination of 26 separate accumulator bets made on five selections.
The popularity of the Canadian bet is based on the large payouts that can be generated if four or more selections win. However, bear in mind that the total payout drops significantly each time a selection loses, and if two selections win the bet will typically only break even.
Because of the large number of bets that are required to create a Canadian/Super Yankee it can be tempting to dismiss the bet as too complex. If you’re not careful it can also be an expensive bet to place, with each of the 26 bets requiring a separate stake.
With this in mind we’ll help you to get your head around a Canadian bet, explain how it works and walk you through the process of placing your first Super Yankee bet.
A Super Yankee/Canadian bet is a combination of:
These bets are made using five selections made in the betting markets. The same amount of money is wagered on each individual bet. You can include any selection in a Canadian bet, but it is common to make all five selections from a single sport and market, for example horseracing win bets.
Sub-bet | Super Yankee selections | Number of bets |
---|---|---|
Doubles | 1-2, 1-3, 1-4,1-5, 2-3, 2-4, 2-5, 3-4, 3-5, 4-5 | 10 |
Trebles | 1-2-3, 1-2-4, 1-2-5, 1-3-4, 1-3-5, 1-4-5, 2-3-4, 2-3-5, 2-4-5, 3-4-5 | 10 |
Four-folds | 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-5, 1-2-4-5, 1-3-4-5, 2-3-4-5 | 5 |
Five fold | 1-2-3-4-5 | 1 |

Placing a Canadian bet starts with picking five selections in the betting markets. This is not a good time to place speculative bets – you want to feel as confident as possible in each selection you make.
Once you have identified your selections, the next step is placing all of the bets used to construct your Super Yankee bet.
Fortunately this is fairly simple at online bookies. All you need to do to place your Super Yankee is make five selections in the betting markets.
Once these are all on the betting slip ‘Super Yankee’ will appear among the options for multiple and accumulator bets.
All you need to do at this point is enter the stake you want to place on the bet. Keep in mind that this stake will be multiplied by 26 to cover all the component bets.
Review your bet to ensure your selections and stake are correct and you can submit your bet.
Once results start coming through the components of your Canadian bet will start generating results, and the final bet payout will be determined once all selections have completed their events.
The only real complexity when it comes to a Canadian bet is understanding what size payout you will receive depending on how many selections win their events.
The good news is that you can use the Paddy Power online Canadian bet calculator to determine how many selections you need to win to earn a profit on your Super Yankee, as well as the different payouts for these permutations.

You can technically construct a Canadian bet at any online bookmaker, as all online bookies offer doubles, trebles, four-folds and five-folds.
However, chances are you’d rather the bookie automates the creation of your Canadian bet rather than placing all 26 bets individually.
A number of online bookies offer Canadian bets as an option on their betting slips once five selections have been made in the betting markets.
These include:
There are 26 individual bets in a Super Yankee bet.
The origins of the term ‘Canadian bet’ are unclear. The alternative name, Super Yankee, is derived from the Yankee bet. This is in turn rumoured to have come from a bet placed by an American soldier in the UK who placed a small bet using this system to generate a massive payout. How the betting term Super Yankee morphed into a ‘Canadian’ is unknown. Given the origin of the Yankee bet, it’s possible this bet type was invented by a Canadian. However, it may also be a tongue-in-cheek jab at the characters of people residing across the northern border of the United States.
A Lucky 31 bet comprises all the same bets as Super Yankee, but includes another 5 bets in the form of singles bets on each of the five selections used in the typical Canadian bet.
A Lucky 31 bet with five winning selections will always pay out more than a Super Yankee bet with five winning selections as the additional bets generate additional returns. However, by the same token Lucky 31 bets will be more costly and less profitable when selections in the bet lose.
A Trixie bet is a far simpler bet than a Canadian bet, as it features just four bets. It’s therefore a good bet to consider if you have four selections you are confident in, compared to the Super Yankee which requires you to make more successful bets to make a profit. If you’re looking to maximise your profits from a larger number of bets and selections, a Canadian bet is the way to go.
A Super Yankee bet can be an expensive bet to place, as it multiplies your bet stake by 26. However, the potential reward from this bet is proportional to the risk. In fact payouts from Super Yankee bets can be so large that many bookies impose payout limits on winnings from these bets. Super Yankee bets offer the most value when you can minimize the stake while increasing the potential payout.
A 1 pound Canadian bet will set you back £26.
A 25p Canadian bet will cost a total of £6.50.
A 10p Canadian bet comes to a total of £2.60.
A 5p Super Yankee costs a total of £1.30.
A 5p Super Yankee including each-way bets will cost £2.60.
