The race features 13 fences and attracts horses being groomed for future participation in major 2 mile races like the Tingle Creek Chase and Queen Mother Champion Chase.
A number of Arkle Challenge Trophy winners have gone on to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase, with two horses achieving the Arkle and Champion Chase double since 2010.
Arkle Chase trends
In the past five years every horse that started this race priced under Evens came home a winner. When the race has started with the favourite priced over Evens the title has gone to a relative outsider, including a major upset by 33/1 Warhorse in 2014.
A winner prior to the Arkle appears to be a requirement for a win. Four of the last five winners won at Grade 1 or 2 level before heading to Cheltenham, and all five won their previous race.
2016 Arkle Challenge Trophy field
The Arkle Challenge Trophy has produced an under Evens favourite in 2016 in Douvan. Priced well under Evens he’s unbeaten since June 2014 and claimed the Supreme Novices Hurdle at the 2015 Cheltenham Festival. His last two wins have been in excess of 15 furlongs, so not much to argue with here. You’d need to put down a sizeable stake though to profit off his win.
The rest of the field is currently priced 5/1 or higher, further highlighting the quality of the antepost favourite. Bookies have Vaniteux as the best of the rest following two wins and a place in a 2015-16 season that saw him moved from hurdles to fences. He looks a reasonable enough option to come home placed and offers just enough value to squeak out a profit on each way bets if he does.
The Game Changer’s recent form suggests he could live up to his name at Cheltenham. He’s won three and taken second once in four races this season, and in eight starts over fences hasn’t finished outside the top two once. Priced at 20/1 he’s a gamble, but will pay out well if he places for your each-way bets.
