Cheltenham Gold Cup

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the biggest Grade 1 race in National Hunt racing, showcasing the talents of the UK and Ireland’s top steeplechasers over 3 miles 2.5 furlongs.

2024 Cheltenham Gold Cup Preview

Galopin Des Champs, the reigning Cheltenham Gold Cup champion, enters the 2024 edition of the race without having lost any steam from his performances last season.

A winner in the Grade 1 Savills Chase and the Grade 1 Irish Gold Cup in his last two races, he won the former by 23 lengths, cementing his credentials as the most powerful stayer in the UK and Ireland.

Fastorslow has been priced as his challenger, despite being beaten by over 4 lengths by Galopin Des Champs in the Irish Gold Cup.

If there’s to be an upset, it’s most likely to come from the tantalizingly priced, talented and temperamental Gerri Colombe, who won the Grade 1 Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down ROyal in November and was a winner in the Grade 1 Mildmay Novices Chase at Aintree last season.

2024 Cheltenham Gold Cup Tips & Analysis

Galopin Des Champs is a very strong favourite and is likely to continue the winning run of race favourites in big races at Cheltenham 2024.

If you want a bigger payout in the race than a back bet on an Evens favourite you are better off looking at a horse who’ll generate a good return on each-way and place bets with a top three finish.

The tipster with the best hit rate when it comes to picking horses that finish in the top three is The Score, with 49.52% of the horses he backs going on to finish in the top three places.

He’s thrown his weight behind the 2023 Grand National champion, Corach Rambler. This stayer has also been backed by Rory Delargy, who has a more modest 32.04% hit rate for finding the places.

About the Cheltenham Gold Cup

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the most prestigious Grade 1 race in National Hunt racing. Run over a distance of 3 miles 2½ furlongs, it serves as the championship race for middle distance steeplechasers in the United Kingdom. Entry to the race is open to 5-year-old and above racehorses and 22 fences are jumped on the way to the finishing post.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is one of a handful of thoroughbred races in England that attracts interest from the general public, with an estimated 1.4 million people tuning in to watch the race annually. This high level of public interest makes the race a major annual event for bookmakers, who can make huge profits or losses depending on the outcome of the race.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup has a tendency to attract at least two world class entries, which tends to resist the downward pressure the public would otherwise place on an outright favourite. In fact only one winner has run out priced under Evens since 1950. The net result of this is you can usually get good value on the favourite, who in recent years has approached a 40% strike rate in the race.

However, value is usually found in the horses priced high enough to pay out on each way bets if they place. The intensity of the race can easily expose the favourite to injury or a fall, which can open the Gold Cup up to the outsiders. Which in turn means that selecting the outsider most likely to place can be the most lucrative approach to Gold Cup betting.
