About the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase

The Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase is a Grade 3 handicap chase run at the Cheltenham Festival. The race covers a distance of 2 miles 110 yards over the Cheltenham New Course, making it the shortest distance handicap chase run at the Festival. The race features 14 fences and is open to 5-year-old and above racehorses.

First run in 1834, the Grand Annual Chase is not just the oldest race at the Cheltenham Festival, but the oldest race on the current National Hunt calendar. In its long history the Grand Annual Chase has tended to attracted ordinary horses. Only two winners have gone on to win major races, with both Pearlyman and Edredon Bleu subsequently winning the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

The Grand Annual Chase is run towards the end of the day, and as such will usually shed the attention of casual punters. This means the favourites will usually be priced over 4/1 where they’ll reward you fairly consistently if you can find bookies paying out each-way bets to fourth place.

Otherwise look out for horses who ran well in their previous race under heavier weight or on heavier ground, and back them to improve. Winners will frequently emerge from the 10/1 – 30/1 band, so this is a good opportunity to place a riskier bet on a horse that could improve and potentially end the Festival with a solid payout.
