About the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup
The Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup is the Cheltenham Festival’s steeplechase showcase of amateur jockeys in the UK. Open to 5-year-old and above steeplechasers, the race covers a distance of 3 miles 1½ furlongs and features 19 fences. The race is a handicap, and despite having been contested at the Cheltenham Festival since 1946 carries no grading.
The Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup tends to pull in fields of grizzled but otherwise ordinary handicap veterans with solid staying power. However, it I has produced one famous alumni, with 2010 winner, Ballabriggs, going on to win the Grand National the following season. It has also produced two multiple race winners, with both Chu-The and Glyde Court taking a pair of victories.
The Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup defies educated bets. With relatively unknown riders up against average horses levelled out by handicaps, picking a winner is largely guesswork. This is reflected in the starting prices of recent winners, which range from 9/2 to 40/1.
The only notable trend in the rate is that top weight has not proven a problem to a few recent winners, which means the best horse in the field as rated by the handicapper could be worth getting behind. Also stay clear of younger horses, no horse younger than 7 has won this race since 1971.
