Baring Bingham Novices’ Hurdle

Featuring top quality fields, the Baring Bingham Novices Hurdle (run as the Gallagher Novices Hurdle this year) is the UK’s championship race for novice hurdlers over 2 miles 5 furlongs.

2025 Baring Bingham Novices’ Hurdle Preview

The Baring Bingham Novices’ Chase has produced two strong favourites in Final Demand and The New Lion.

Both horses are unbeaten heading into this race, with Final Demand heading to Cheltenham on the back of a Grade 1 hurdles win at Leopardstown while The New Lion won a Grade 1 at Newbury on his last outing.

Both horses are strong candidates, but neither will pay out a profit on each-way bets if they place.

The Yellow Clay is the first entry to offer each-way value. Also a Grade 1 hurdles winner on his last outing, he hasn’t lost this season with all his races taking place in Ireland. At 13/2 he’s the best value bet in the field as he’ll pay out each-way bets if he only manages a place.

About the Baring Bingham Novices’ Hurdle

The Baring Bingham Novices’ Hurdle is the premier 2 mile 4 furlong novices hurdle in the United Kingdom. The race is open to 4-year-old and above novice hurdlers, who are required to jump 10 hurdles on the way to the finishing post.

The Baring Bingham Novices’ Hurdle attracts strong fields. As a result it has been a stepping stone to greatness for a number of famous National Hunt racehorses, including multiple Champion Hurdle winners Istabraq and Hardy Eustace.

The Baring Bingham Novices’ Hurdle is one of the toughest Grade 1 races at the Cheltenham Festival to call. The young, inexperienced but talented field is enough to make a mockery of betting markets and pundits predictions.

Generally horses that are rated 150 or higher with strong recent form are going to be worth a closer look, although these will typically be at the top of the markets anyway. One strategy is to look out rapidly improving horses rather than the obvious candidates, as these have the potential to storm to victory at better odds than you’ll find on the top two to three in the betting.
