The Queen Mother Champion Chase is one of the highlights of the Cheltenham Festival, pitting the UK and Ireland’s finest 2 mile steeplechase specialists against each other in an exhilarating contest.
2025 Queen Mother Champion Chase Preview
Jonbon has been clearing up Grade 1 chase titles since his last run in the Champion Chase, where he lost out to Elixir De Nutz after starting the race as 1/4 favourite. His backers have not lost faith in him, and he starts the 2025 Champion Chase as the Evens favourite.
No other horses are priced under the 4/1 margin, with only Marine Nationale priced as a serious contender at 11/2. He’s placed in his last three races and last won a chase in December 2023.
Priced further back is Solness, who is a genuine threat to Jonbon’s aspirations. He’s won two Grade 1 chases on the trot at Punchestown and is in the strongest form of his career, at 9/1 he offers unbeatable value in this field.
If you want to take a higher risk bet, Libberty Hunter is worth a look. He’s had some good results in handicaps and was a winner at Cheltenham in December. At 33/1 he’ll reward each-way bets handsomely if he places.

The Queen Mother Champion Chase is the premier 2 mile steeplechase in National Hunt racing. The race is run over the Old Course at Cheltenham on the second day of the Festival, with 12 fences jumped on the way to the finishing post. The race is open to 5-year-old and above steeplechase racehorses.
The Queen Mother Champion Chase attracts the finest 2 mile specialists in jumps racing, as well as horses who’re strong over 2.5 miles. A win in the race is typically a crowning achievement in a horse’s career, and multiple winners rank as all time greats in the sport of National Hunt racing.
The Queen Mother Champion Chase attracts widespread public interest in the UK, which means that betting markets usually see the favourite’s odds weighted down by money from casual punters. This has translated into a pretty poor track record by antepost favourites, with short priced entries frequently failing to make the places.
The Clarence House Chase is the key trial for the Queen Mother Champion Chase, and the winner is always worth a punt if they make the final field. The same goes for horses who have won the Arkle Challenge Trophy in previous visits to Cheltenham. Horses who have won both races in their careers are the strongest Champion Chase candidates you’re likely to find.
