Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse, located near Wrexham in Wales, is a unique and historic venue established in 1859. Unlike most UK racecourses, it has no traditional grandstand, offering instead an elevated, natural viewing experience from grassy banks that provide excellent sightlines across the track.
The course is a left-handed jumps track with a distinctive triangular layout, hosting around 14 National Hunt fixtures each year. Known for its relatively stiff fences, Bangor-on-Dee presents an added challenge for horses and riders. Remarkably, the course has retained much of its original charm since its founding, while adapting to meet modern racing standards.
Since 2006, Bangor-on-Dee has also featured amateur Point-to-Point races on an inner, right-handed track. The venue is favored by top trainers, including Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson, who use it to prepare their horses for larger events.
Notable races at Bangor-On-Dee include the Anne Duchess of Westminster Memorial Handicap Steeple Chase as well as a Listed mares’ race.
The Bangor-On-Dee track is relatively flat and spans about 2 miles in circumference, incorporating three sharp turns and nine well-positioned fences per circuit.
These fences are challenging yet fair, making Bangor-on-Dee particularly suitable for novice jumpers. The tight turns and shorter straights naturally encourage a faster pace, with horses needing agility and endurance to navigate effectively.
Strategically, Bangor-on-Dee favors front-runners who can secure a prominent position early. Maintaining speed through the sharp turns is crucial, as taking them too quickly can risk wide positioning, while holding back can lose ground that’s hard to regain on this course.
With a short 325-yard run-in to the finish, jockeys aim to position their horses strategically before entering the final straight, relying on a well-timed finishing kick to secure the win.
Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse has a storied history that dates back to 1859, when the first organized racing took place. The initial event was a steeplechase known as the Grand Wynnstay Steeplechase, which followed a course similar to today’s layout.
The origins of racing in the area can be traced back even further, to 1858, when members of Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn’s Hunt held a cross-country match on nearby meadows.
The early years of Bangor-on-Dee saw a mix of events, from pony races to amateur competitions, and in 1868, a young Fred Archer secured a win here, launching his legendary jockey career.
The course faced challenges in the 20th century, including an incident in 1970 when cattle overgrazed part of the track, causing a meeting cancellation and leading to an exclusive-use agreement with Peel Settled Estates.
Bangor-on-Dee’s modern era began in 2002, with ownership by Chester Race Company, which invested in upgrades and introduced an in-house betting system, bangorBET, in 2012—making it the first UK racecourse in 80 years to operate without a tote system.
Today, Bangor-on-Dee hosts around 16 National Hunt fixtures annually, drawing local and visiting enthusiasts alike. The racecourse also hosts amateur Point-to-Point events and remains a cornerstone of Welsh racing. In 2018, it earned the ROA Small Racecourse of the Year award, reflecting its commitment to quality racing and community engagement.
