About Cartmel Racecourse

Cartmel Racecourse features a distinctive left-handed oval track that is approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) in circumference, characterized by its sharp turns and undulating terrain.
The course is primarily used for National Hunt racing and includes six fences on each full circuit. One of its most notable features is the exceptionally long run-in, measuring four furlongs (804 meters) for steeplechase races, which is among the longest in the UK. Hurdle races have a slightly shorter run-in of just under two furlongs (402 meters).
The racing strategy at Cartmel often favors front-runners due to the lengthy run-in, requiring horses to maintain stamina throughout the race. Jockeys must be cautious about when to make their move; an early commitment can lead to exhaustion before reaching the finish line, while waiting too long might result in missing the opportunity to secure a lead.
This unique track layout means that certain horses may become known as “course specialists,” excelling at Cartmel while struggling on other tracks. The combination of obstacles and the specific demands of the course makes racing at Cartmel a thrilling challenge for both horses and riders.
Cartmel Racecourse boasts a rich history dating back to its first official race meeting on Whit Monday in 1856. Although the exact origins of racing at Cartmel are unclear, it’s believed that the tradition began far earlier, perhaps in the 12th century with mule races organized by the monks of Cartmel Priory. The arrival of the railway in Cark-in-Cartmel in 1857 further boosted attendance, establishing Cartmel as a popular racecourse.
Initially, Cartmel hosted only flat races, but by the late 1900s, the focus shifted to jump racing, reflecting the area’s strong hunting and farming traditions. Racing faced interruptions during both World Wars, with events resuming in 1947.
Before this, only one race day took place per season, but post-war interest led to additional meetings, including an August event added in the 1960s. At this time, amateur jockeys were common at Cartmel, but with the involvement of military figures Colonel Davy Pain and Major Tim Riley, the racecourse transitioned into a notable National Hunt venue.
Their contributions attracted professional jockeys and drew larger crowds, enhanced by upgraded facilities and entertainment options like the addition of a funfair.
The Cavendish family, owners of the Holker Estate, have long been associated with the racecourse. Lord Cavendish joined the board in 1974 and acquired full ownership in 1998. Under his guidance, Cartmel saw major developments, including a new Grandstand and hospitality suite in 2004.
Over the years, Cartmel has hosted memorable events, including the notorious “Gay Future” betting coup of 1974, in which an Irish betting syndicate attempted a daring fraud.
