Chester Racecourse, popularly known as the Roodee, is a historic flat racing venue located in Chester, England.
Recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest operational racecourse in the world, it dates back to 1539, although some records suggest racing may have begun as early as 1512. The racecourse covers 65 acres and is situated on the banks of the River Dee.
Chester Racecourse is relatively compact, being one of the smallest significant flat racecourses in England, measuring just 1 mile and 1 furlong (approximately 1.8 km) in length.
It can accommodate around 30,000 spectators, with various viewing options including three grandstands and access to Chester’s ancient city walls, which provide free views of the races.
The premier racing event held at Chester Racecourse is the May Festival. Prominent races run during the meeting include the prestigious Chester Cup handicap race, as well as the Group 3 Chester Vase and Ormonde Stakes.
Chester Racecourse features a compact racetrack that spans just over one mile in circumference.
The track is defined by its sharp, left-handed turns, requiring horses to navigate continuous curves throughout the race. The home straight, at only 239 yards, is exceptionally short, creating an environment where front-running tactics often prove advantageous.
The tight nature of the course favors horses with early speed, as there is minimal opportunity to recover from a poor position.
During races jockeys typically aim to secure early positions near the rail to save ground and maintain momentum through the turns. The brief run-in amplifies the advantage of leading or being close to the front, especially in shorter races such as those over 5 furlongs, where statistics show that around 8 out of 10 winners emerge from low draws.
This draw bias becomes even more pronounced in larger fields, making stall positions a crucial consideration for trainers and jockeys when planning their races.
While low draws provide an edge across most distances at Chester, the bias is less pronounced in longer races. On softer ground, the impact of the draw bias also diminishes, as many horses tire significantly, prompting jockeys to adapt their tactics and shift toward the stands side in search of firmer footing.
Chester Racecourse holds the distinction of being the oldest operational racecourse in the world, with its roots tracing back to1539.
The site’s history stretches even further, as it was once a Roman harbor on the River Dee, serving the garrison of Deva, now modern-day Chester. Over time, the river’s silt buildup transformed the area into an island, giving rise to its name “Roodee,” derived from Norse and Saxon terms meaning “The Island of the Cross.”
This name was reinforced during the Middle Ages when a stone cross was erected on the site, adding to its historical significance. Horse racing in Chester likely predates its formal establishment, with evidence suggesting races occurred as early as 1512.
The first recorded prize, a silver bell, was awarded during a Chester fair, marking the beginnings of organized racing. In 1539, Mayor Henry Gee introduced an annual racing event on the Roodee, cementing a tradition that endures today. The association of racehorses with the term “gee gees” originates from this period, as a nod to Henry Gee’s pivotal role in the sport.
By 1817, the growing popularity of races led to the construction of Chester’s first grandstand, offering spectators an enhanced view of the track.
The annual May Festival further elevated the venue’s profile, with key events such as the Chester Cup, Chester Vase, Ormonde Stakes, and Dee Stakes gardually introduced to the meeting between 1813 and 1936, attracting top competitors from across Britain and beyond.
Throughout the 19th century, Chester Racecourse emerged as a prominent social hub, drawing diverse crowds from across the country. The tradition of racing on the Roodee persisted into the modern era, blending its rich heritage with contemporary innovation.
In recent years, Chester Racecourse has embraced modernization, introducing digital platforms for betting and enhancing visitor amenities to improve the overall experience.
