About Doncaster Racecourse

Doncaster Racecourse, located in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, is one of the oldest and most prominent racecourses in the UK, with a history dating back to the 16th century.
It has a spectator capacity of around 32,000 and includes a modern five-storey grandstand and extensive spectator facilities including private hospitality suites, various dining options and bars.
Doncaster racecourse hosts 37 race days annually, featuring both flat and National Hunt racing. Notable events include the prestigious St Leger Stakes, recognized as the world’s oldest classic horse race, which takes place during the four-day St Leger Festival every September.
This festival is considered the premier UK racing event of the autumn calendar and draws large crowds. Other significant races at Doncaster include the Lincoln Handicap, marking the start of the flat season, and the Futurity Trophy, which concludes it.
Notable National Hunt races run at Doncaster Racecourse include the Great Yorkshire Handicap Chase, the Grade 2 Yorkshire Rose Mares’ Hurdle, the River Don Novices’ Hurdle, and the Grimthorpe Handicap Chase.
Doncaster Racecourse features a left-handed, pear-shaped track measuring approximately 1 mile and 7½ furlongs. It is primarily flat, with a gentle rise towards the finish line, which can influence race strategies.
For flat races Doncaster is known for favoring hold-up horses rather than front runners. Over shorter distances like 5 furlongs and 6 furlongs, front runners tend to perform poorly, with statistics indicating that these styles are less effective compared to those who race from mid-division or are held up.
The trend continues across other distances; for example, over a mile, while front runners may show better win percentages, their place percentages suggest they are not as competitive overall.
The National Hunt course at Doncaster features eleven fences and seven hurdles per circuit. The layout allows for a run-in of just over a furlong, providing a fair opportunity for competitors to make their move towards the finish line.
Town Moor, the site of Doncaster Racecourse, has a history of racing dating back to the 16th century. A map from 1595 shows that there was already a racetrack present at the location at this time.
Historical records indicate that the local racing corporation attempted to ban racing at Doncaster in 1600 due to unruly crowds but ultimately marked out a permanent racecourse by 1614 after recognizing their failure to enforce the ban.
In 1778, Doncaster gained prominence with the inaugural running of the St Leger Stakes, which was established by Colonel Anthony St. Leger. This race became one of the five Classics of British horse racing and is now recognized as the oldest of them all.
Throughout its history, Doncaster Racecourse has undergone various developments and renovations. The original grandstand was designed by John Carr and lasted until 1968, while a subsequent stand was built in 1825 for members of the Doncaster Racing Club.
The course has also seen significant changes due to historical events; for instance, during both World Wars, racing was suspended when the grounds were repurposed for military use.
In 1992, Doncaster Racecourse made history by staging the first-ever Sunday meeting on a British racecourse, drawing an impressive crowd despite there being no betting allowed.
In recent years, Doncaster Racecourse has invested heavily in modernization, completing a £34 million redevelopment in 2018 that introduced a new five-storey grandstand featuring private hospitality suites and enhanced dining options.
This transformation has positioned Doncaster as one of the premier turf racecourses in the UK.
