Exeter Racecourse, situated on Haldon Hill in Devon, is a National Hunt racing venue in the UK. It is recognized as the highest racecourse in the country, standing at 850 feet above sea level.
The racecourse has a spectator capacity of approximately 4,500, providing an intimate setting for racing enthusiasts. Facilities include the Haldon Stand, which caters to premier ticket holders; the Anstey Stand; and the Brockman Stand.
Exeter hosts around 17 National Hunt fixtures annually, primarily from October to May. Major meetings at Exeter include the Haldon Gold Cup, a Grade 2 limited handicap steeplechase run over 2 miles and 1 furlong each November.
This event has been a highlight of the racing calendar since its inception in 1982 and attracts high-quality horses. Another notable race is the Devon National, which showcases longer-distance steeplechasing.
Exeter Racecourse features a right-handed, undulating oval layout, which measures about two miles around and includes an uphill finish that challenges horses’ stamina and skill.
Exeter features eleven fences per circuit for steeplechase races and seven flights of hurdles on the same two-mile circuit. The run-in to the finish line is less than a furlong, adding to the challenge as horses must maintain their speed while navigating the final uphill stretch.
The layout of the Exeter course influences tactics regarding positioning. Horses that can secure a prominent position early in the race often have an advantage, as they can dictate pace and avoid potential traffic issues.
In steeplechase events, the spacing of the fences can pose challenges; while they are relatively easy compared to some other courses, the uneven spacing requires horses to be agile and well-prepared for quick adjustments.
The site at Exeter Racecourse was originally known as Haldon Racecourse by locals and was officially recognized as Devon and Exeter until the early 1990s
It is believed that King Charles II played a pivotal role in establishing the racecourse due to his passion for the sport. The first recorded flat race at Exeter took place in 1769, but National Hunt racing did not debut until 1898 when the Haldon Race Club was formed.
The early years saw a mix of flat racing and occasional hurdles, but over time, Exeter transitioned exclusively to National Hunt racing, which has become its primary focus.
Exeter has hosted numerous significant events and notable horses. The course’s popularity peaked in the early 19th century, attracting entries from across the country. However, interest waned by the mid-1800s, leading to periods of reduced activity, particularly during World War II.
Despite these challenges, Exeter has remained a vital venue for National Hunt racing. A significant moment in Exeter’s history occurred in 1833, when it became the site of Devon’s last duel between Dr. Peter Hennis and Judge Sir John Jeffcott over personal grievances.
In terms of facilities, Exeter has evolved significantly over the years. The original grandstand was built in 1911, and subsequent renovations have modernized the venue.
Exeter has hosted many memorable races and legendary horses throughout its history, including Desert Orchid and Best Mate. Best Mate notably collapsed and died from a suspected heart attack at the course in 2005 while competing in the Haldon Gold Cup.
