About Leopardstown Racecourse

Leopardstown Racecourse, situated about 8 kilometers south of Dublin, is Ireland’s premier dual-purpose racing venue.
Established in 1888, it was designed to emulate Sandown Park Racecourse in England. The course occupies a 220-acre estate and features a left-handed oval track measuring one mile and six furlongs, distinguished by an uphill finishing straight. The Horse Racing Board of Ireland acquired Leopardstown in 1967.
Leopardstown hosts both flat and jump racing events throughout the year. Annually, there are 23 race days, including significant events such as the Christmas Festival, Dublin Racing Festival, Bulmers Live at Leopardstown, and Longines Irish Champions Weekend. A highlight of the racing calendar is the Irish Champion Stakes, held each September.
Spectator capacity can vary depending on the event, with temporary structures often erected for larger meetings, accommodating up to 18,000 spectators.
Leopardstown Racecourse is a left-handed oval track with a circumference of one mile and six furlongs. While mostly flat, the course features an uphill finishing straight of two and a half furlongs.
For jumps racing, the hurdles course is located on the inner track, presenting a sharper challenge with a total of seven flights. The chase course incorporates ten fences per circuit, six on the backstretch and one in the home straight. These fences are considered stiff but not overly demanding.
A successful racing strategy in both hurdles and chase races often involves racing close to the pace or leading from the front. The hurdle course particularly favors front-runners or prominent runners.
For flat racing, horses that are held up struggle to win. It’s generally advantageous to race close to the pace or from the front. This front-running bias is more pronounced on soft to heavy ground and remains consistent across all distances. Draw bias is minimal; however, over one mile, low-drawn runners may have a slight advantage, as do those drawn low in six-furlong events.
Leopardstown Racecourse opened its gates on August 27, 1888. The vision of Captain George Quin, the racecourse was inspired by and modeled after Sandown Park Racecourse in England. Quin established the Leopardstown Race Company early in 1888, transforming grazing land into what would become a prominent racing venue.
The inaugural race day attracted a massive crowd, reportedly exceeding 50,000 attendees, aided by the convenience of a nearby railway line. Early infrastructure included a public standhouse, a members’ standhouse, refreshment facilities, and even an ambulance room, showcasing the ambition of the project.
The original track design encompassed a one mile 6 furlong circuit, later enhanced with the addition of a straight five furlong course. A significant turning point in Leopardstown’s history occurred in 1967 when the Horse Racing Board of Ireland took ownership.
Throughout its existence, Leopardstown has been a stage for both Flat and National Hunt racing, hosting races of varying classes, including prestigious Group 1 events.
