About Naas Racecourse

- Details
Naas Racecourse is dual-purpose racing venue located in County Kildare, Ireland, just outside of Dublin. The racecourse hosts around 20 meetings a year.
Naas racecourse is left-handed with an uphill finish and a long run-in, making it an attractive destinations for horses that are strong on speed and stamina.
Facilities at Naas Racecourse include The Circle, a €1.7 million cylindrical building offering unique views of the track and parade ring, along with renovated Grandstand facilities, a self-service restaurant, café, and members lounge.
Major National Hunt meetings at Naas Racecourse include the Grade 2 Slaney Novice Hurdle, Nas Na Riogh Novice Chase, and the Johnstown Novice Hurdle. The Group 3 Blue Wind Stakes is one of the biggest flat races run at the venue.
Naas Racecourse features a left-handed oval track with a circuit distance of approximately one and a half miles. It features a stiff four-furlong straight with an uphill finish. The track includes two shoots of two furlongs each, allowing for races over five, six, seven furlongs, and one mile to be run on the straight.
For flat racing, Naas is known as a galloping track that suits strong, stamina-filled horses. The long, stiff straight and uphill finish require horses to maintain their pace throughout the race, favoring those with endurance. There is a pronounced draw bias over five furlongs, where low-drawn horses have a significant advantage due to the sharp turn into the straight.
This bias is less pronounced at longer distances but still exists to some extent over ten furlongs and a mile. Racing strategy often involves securing a good early position, particularly from a low draw, and maintaining a strong pace throughout.
The jumps course at Naas features eight fences and six hurdles on its inner track. The course is considered a fair, galloping track that suits stayers well.
The area win which Naas Racecourse is located has been associated with horse racing for over 260 years. In 1922, during the height of the Irish Civil War, a group of eight farmers and gentlemen, along with a retired army general, formed the Naas Race Company.
This initiative was supported by local subscriptions, which enabled the purchase of over 100 acres of farmland on the east side of Naas. The land was then converted into a proper racecourse. The first official meeting at Naas took place on June 19, 1924.
Over the last century Naas Racecourse has evolved constantly, with significant investments in infrastructure. Notable developments include the construction of a new grandstand in 1997, the addition of a new bar and weigh room in 2003, the widening of the track in 2005, a new stable yard in 2009, and the introduction of The Circle in 2019.
