Ladbrokes review

3.5

In July 2015, Ladbrokes announced its decision to merge with the Gala Coral Group. Together, the combined companies will form the largest bookmaker in Britain and one of the largest in the world.

Ladbrokes is also the oldest of the major UK bookmakers, dating all the way back to 1886. In recent years, it freshened up its online and mobile offerings, and launched a betting exchange, hoping to become “the e-enabled international betting and gaming business.”

Here we review Ladbroke’s strengths and weaknesses in detail.

Ladbrokes trust & financial stability
3

Ladbrokes is a giant in the betting industry, with total revenues in excess of £1 billion per year, more than 2,700 betting shops in the UK, Ireland, Belgium and Spain and telephone betting operations serving roughly 120,000 customers. Over a million customers gamble over the internet at Ladbrokes.com.

However, both 2013 and 2014 were stressful years for Ladbrokes. Profits from the company’s digital division plummeted, and acting CEO Richard Glynn was forced to admit to the company’s “lack of competitiveness in sportsbook”. Efforts to turn the company’s fortunes – including the introduction of a Ladbrokes betting exchange and of new web and mobile platforms – appear largely to have failed. For the first half of 2014, Ladbrokes announced a whopping 49.7% drop in pre-tax profits.

In July 2015, Ladbrokes officially announced its intention to merge with the Gala Coral Group. Together, the two companies will form Britain’s biggest bookmaker, with more than 4,000 betting shops.

Like most other big brand bookmakers, Ladbrokes is registered with the Independent Betting Adjudication Service (IBAS), which adjudicates in cases of betting disputes and provides important protection for customers.

Ladbrokes odds
3

Ladbrokes doesn’t typically offer the best odds on the market. However, its odds for major soccer leagues are very competitive.

Overall, Ladbroke’s average profit margin is 4.8%, which is slightly lower than the industry average of 5.1% (meaning that more of the profits go to punters). However, Ladbroke’s profit margin on basketball betting is a whopping 10.7%, indicating that its basketball odds are particularly poor value.

Ladbrokes specials & promotions
3

If you sign up for an account with the sportsbook, Ladbrokes will give you up to a £20 free bet if you bet £5 at odds totalling 1/2 or greater.

Ladbrokes also offers good on-going football specials, such as accumulator bonuses and money back on certain markets when red cards are shown or the score is 0-0. It also provides best odds guaranteed for horse racing.

However, Ladbrokes doesn’t offer as many bonuses and specials as Paddy Power or Betfred on specific events, and overall its promotions aren’t as exciting as those of several of its competitors.

Ladbrokes website
3

The Ladbrokes site has improved and is fairly easy to use but is also quite busy, with a lot of information displayed at once and strongly contrasting black, white and red colours.

The emphasis in the sportsbook section is firmly on live betting, with in-play markets given pride of place by default. The black in-play console and white background of other markets can be distracting, but you can easily collapse the in-play section. You can also choose what sports you want to see.

The site covers a very wide range of betting markets in sports, politics, news and media, with both fixed-odds and live betting.

Bets are accepted in a wide range of different languages and in 17 different currencies. Most methods of payment are accepted, including NETELLERSkrill and PayPal (which can be used for both withdrawals and deposits).

Ladbrokes has significantly expanded its live streaming service. It now offers over 30,000 live sports streams a year, with live coverage of football, horse racing and tennis, as well as coverage of key events in snooker, darts, basketball, volleyball and pool.

Ladbrokes mobile
3.5

Ladbrokes has both an iPhone and iPad app on the Apple App Store as well as an Android App on Google Play.

Ladbrokes’s mobile sportsbook provides a modern interface that, according to Ladbrokes, uses the latest technology “to ensure high performance, speed and reliability”. The new mobile site provides simple navigation and an easy-to-use bet slip, as well as a “Quickbet” feature that makes it possible to bet a preconfigured amount in just three clicks.

Ladbrokes customer service
4

Ladbrokes provides customer service via e-mail and telephone, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. We’ve found its customer service representatives to be quick in responding, polite and efficient. Ladbrokes also stands out in that its customer service department can provide support in multiple languages.

The bottom line

Ladbrokes is one of the world’s best-known bookies. It provides a comprehensive package, but falls somewhat short in terms of pricing and promotions. We’d recommend first opening accounts with bet365, 888sport or William Hill before considering Ladbrokes.
